I am also incredibly happy to announce that I have managed to get our first bit of funding to get the project properly underway!  So there will be lot’s of exciting things coming soon that I will let you know about in the next few months. The funding is from Unltd as a part of their Star People Awards and so I would like to say a massive thank you to everyone at Unltd for believing in and supporting me and the Local Mums & Dads project.

If you would like to find out more about what we are doing in the local community and would be interested in volunteering please get in contact.

Or if you’d just like to come and meet me and other local mums and dads please come to our Local Mums & Dads Meet Up & Baby Hang-Out at Karamel Cafe in Wood Green (Coburg Rd, N22 6UJ) on Friday mornings 11-12.30. will be writing a feature review on Babies At Festivals. This will include a review of the Baby Bjorn Travel Cot and any tips and ideas he picks up along the way.

In September we will be reviewing Dora The Explorer Live at Shaftesbury theatre. We still need parent reviewers for this, so if you would like some free tickets please apply now!

Setting up ‘Local Mums And Dads’

I’m a new mum living in Noel Park, Wood Green, Haringey. I’ve spent the last 15 years working as a Youth & Community worker and when I became pregnant I got really frustrated at the lack of information about what classes, groups and support were available so I decided to do something about it. The initial idea was to create an information website, but then as I began speaking to local parents and professionals I realised much more was needed and so I am now in the process of trying to set up a social enterprise ‘Local Mums And Dads’ that aims to inform, inspire and involve local mums and dads in Haringey.

We aim to promote community cohesion, access to services and informed choices by providing comprehensive listings and reviews of local services, products, groups and classes. Through this we have started building networks, evaluating local needs and designing projects that support parents to work in partnership with local organisations and business’.  We offer volunteering opportunities, training and subsidised courses and workshops based on local needs.

Initially I’ll be applying for funding, but the hope is that in time the project can become self sustainable and that by creating revenue through advertising and other means we can then use that to fund local projects ie: a young mums project, a maternity film and subsidised courses and classes.

So far I am just getting started, but things are moving along quickly and within 6 months I  have built up a basic website, done extensive research into local needs, created a volunteer network, achieved an active membership of over 100 local parents, and have initiated and supported parents in developing a number of events, workshops and projects. There are a lot more ideas in the pipe line but I would love to hear from anyone about their suggestions, comments or their interest in getting involved.

To keep in touch about what we are up to, current events, projects and updates  you can join our mailing list and/or follow us on our Facebook Page and Twitter account.
